I need your help.
My family has issues. So many issues. Today I wanna talk about our digestive issues. Well, I don’t need to go into detail, but I’d like your advice if you have it.
I’ve had digestive issues as long as I can remember. I’ve had a history of ulcers, but its spread to reflux, constipation and candida overgrowth. Probably more things, but that’s the main stuff I know of. I have lots of other health issues, I’ve discussed some of them here. But I’ve long suspected if I could figure out how to heal my gut, it would take care of the rest.
Two of my kids have also had gut issues as long as I can remember as well. Pretty much from birth. I had a very difficult pregnancy with both, was on medication and bed rest. And had quite a few rounds of antibiotics due to numerous infections.
I’ve been reading about the GAPS diet. GAPS stands for Gut and Psychology Syndrome. I’m not going to go into all of the details- but here’s the summary. Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride pioneered the GAPS protocol on the theory that learning disabilities, the food we eat, and our digestive systems are all related. And many of these learning disabilities can be healed through healing the gut. Her book is huge and full of great science, and by the end is completely convincing. I felt like she was describing us. And the possibility that this could completely change our lives. I can’t even let myself really go down that road, my heart does somersaults at the very thought.
So why haven’t I already started it?
First, I just finished the book last night…
Second, oh man you guys it is not easy. That is the understatement of the year I think. It is HARD. And that is just for me. But to put the whole family on this crazy hard diet, I’m not sure we could do it.
You have to start with an Intro GAPS diet for around 6 weeks. Its all about healing the gut. Basically you only eat soup for 6 weeks. Or that’s how it looked to me. How do I get the pickiest eaters alive to eat soup for 6 weeks????!? They’ve never even eaten soup before! The thought of it makes me want to go take a nap.
Then you can slowly start to introduce in fruits and veggies and fermented stuff. All of this you’ve made yourself of course.
So many dishes…
If I knew it would heal us you know I’d do it in a heartbeat. I’m afraid that they won’t eat. That they’ll pull a hunger strike. They have the will power to do it. I’m not sure I have the skills to convince them to take this on. It genuinely worries me.
So that’s where I need your advice. What do you think? Have any of you done the GAPS diet or something similar with crazy picky stubborn kids? Was it worth it for you? What kind of support did you get? Should I find a naturopath who works with GAPS diet? Our insurance isn’t great with naturopath coverage, so I’ve really debated how to find the right support.
